First Class, Distinction and CGPA: What Your Degree Classification Means
“First Class”, “First Class with Distinction” and “Second Class” are formal degree classifications only when your university defines them. There is no single CGPA threshold that every Indian university uses. A classification can depend on CGPA or percentage plus conditions such as first-attempt passes or completion within the prescribed duration.
The same 8.0 CGPA can produce different classification outcomes under different regulations. Even when a numerical threshold is met, additional conditions may apply.
What Does First Class Mean?
First Class is an academic classification awarded when a student meets the threshold and conditions defined by the university. It is not a grade point by itself. A university may express the requirement as percentage, CGPA or both.
What Is First Class with Distinction?
Distinction is normally a higher classification than First Class. Some universities require a higher CGPA and also require completion within the prescribed duration, first-appearance passes or compliance with other conditions.
Do not infer Distinction from CGPA alone unless your regulation says CGPA alone is sufficient.
Why Generic Classification Charts Are Risky
A chart saying “8.0 = Distinction” or “6.5 = First Class” may be correct for one university and wrong for another. Regulations can also change between batches.
| Question | Correct Way to Answer |
|---|---|
| What CGPA is First Class? | Check the regulation for your batch |
| What CGPA is Distinction? | Check the numerical threshold and extra conditions |
| Is percentage equivalent enough? | Only if the regulation defines classification from it |
| Does a backlog matter? | It can where first-attempt or duration conditions apply |
Anna University Example
CentralPortal’s Anna University CGPA Calculator notes that the supported R2025 regulation uses a numerical CGPA threshold of at least 8.50 for First Class with Distinction, but also includes conditions involving first appearance, prescribed duration and prevention from examinations. Do not copy that 8.50 threshold to another university.
First Class vs Percentage
Some universities express classifications using percentage while others use CGPA directly. If conversion is required, use the official formula. See CGPA to Percentage for why formulas differ.
Can a Backlog Affect Classification?
Yes, when the regulation includes a first-attempt or time-to-completion condition. You may eventually achieve a high final CGPA after clearing an arrear but still fail one of the additional requirements.

What Does Second Class Mean?
Second Class is another university-defined band. Older regulations and different institutions can use different percentage or CGPA ranges, and some modern transcripts may use only grades and CGPA without a traditional class label.
What Should You Write on a Resume?
If your degree certificate says “First Class with Distinction”, use that exact wording. If it shows only CGPA, list the CGPA and scale unless you have an official equivalence or classification document.
How to Verify Your Classification
Bottom Line
First Class and Distinction are not universal CGPA labels. They are institutional classifications. Use your university’s regulation and final academic record, especially when an application asks for an official class rather than a self-converted percentage.
Classification Is Different From the Grade Scale
Your grade scale tells you how course performance becomes grade points. Degree classification tells you how the completed programme is labelled at the end. The two are connected, but they are not the same rule. A university may use a 10-point CGPA scale and then define First Class or Distinction using separate thresholds and conditions.
Why “8 CGPA = Distinction” Is a Dangerous Shortcut
A generic website may label 8.0 as Distinction because that threshold is used somewhere. Another university may require 8.5, a percentage threshold, or additional first-attempt conditions. If you use a generic chart on a resume or application, you could claim a classification your university never awarded.
Completion Time Can Matter
Some regulations distinguish students who complete all requirements within the normal programme duration from those who take additional semesters. A student may have the same final CGPA as another student but receive a different classification because of completion-time conditions.
First-Appearance Conditions Can Matter
Distinction rules sometimes require passing all relevant courses in the first appearance. If so, a student who clears an arrear later may still earn a high CGPA and First Class but may not satisfy the Distinction clause. This is why backlog history and final CGPA must be checked separately.
How Classification Appears on Official Documents
The consolidated grade sheet, provisional certificate or degree certificate may state the class directly. If it does, that wording is the safest wording to use in a resume. If the documents show only CGPA, do not add “First Class” or “Distinction” unless the regulation clearly establishes it.
What If Your University Uses Percentage Instead of CGPA for Class?
Some regulations define classification using percentage, while the transcript itself may show CGPA. In that case, the official conversion method matters. Do not convert using ×9.5 or ×10 unless that is the prescribed equivalence for your regulation.
Classification and Placement Eligibility Are Not the Same
An employer may require “60% throughout” even if your university calls your result First Class at a different threshold. Another employer may accept “First Class or equivalent”. Always interpret the employer’s wording separately from the university’s degree label.
Classification and Higher Studies
Postgraduate institutions often ask for the original CGPA or percentage rather than the words First Class or Distinction. Overseas institutions may ignore Indian class labels entirely and evaluate the transcript under their own system. Preserve the original numerical result and scale.
Example of Why Conditions Change the Outcome
Imagine two students both finish with 8.6 CGPA. Student A completed every course in first appearance within the prescribed duration. Student B cleared one arrear later. If the university’s Distinction rule requires first-appearance passes, Student A may satisfy the classification while Student B may not, despite identical final CGPA.
What to Verify Before Publishing or Sharing Your Class
Check your regulation number, the award-of-degree section, numerical threshold, first-attempt clause, completion-duration clause and any special exclusions. Then compare those conditions with your actual academic history. This is far safer than relying on a generic classification table.
Frequently Asked Questions
What CGPA is First Class?
There is no universal answer. The threshold must come from the regulation governing your university, programme and batch.
What CGPA is First Class with Distinction?
It varies and can include non-numerical conditions such as first appearance or completion within the normal duration.
Is 8 CGPA a distinction?
Not automatically. It may qualify in some systems and fall short in others.
What is Second Class CGPA?
The band is institution-specific; do not use a generic national chart unless your university adopts it.
Can backlog affect First Class with Distinction?
Yes, in regulations that require first-appearance passes or no reappearance for distinction.
