A newly recruited Railway Group D employee starts at Pay Level 1 with a basic pay of ₹18,000 per month. Basic pay, however, is only the starting point. Railway Group D starting salary in 2026
With the currently notified 60% DA and common allowances, an entry-level Level 1 employee can have an approximate gross salary of ₹32,000 to ₹36,000 per month before deductions, depending mainly on the posting city and allowance eligibility.
The RRB Level 1 recruitment notification lists an initial pay of ₹18,000. The Union Cabinet increased Central Government DA from 58% to 60% with effect from 1 January 2026.
What Is Railway Group D Salary Per Month?
For a fresh Railway Group D appointment, the official starting basic pay is ₹18,000 in Pay Level 1.
This is not the same as the employee’s gross salary or in-hand salary. Railway employees can also receive Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance and, for certain jobs or duties, additional railway-specific allowances.
As of September 2026, the latest notified Dearness Allowance for Central Government employees is 60% of basic pay. On an ₹18,000 basic salary, that means:

Railway Group D In-Hand Salary in 2026
There is no single correct in-hand figure for every Railway Group D employee. Posting city, railway quarters, pension option, duty pattern and other deductions all affect the final payslip.
A useful starting estimate can be made for a fresh Level 1 employee who receives normal HRA and Transport Allowance.

A practical starting range: for a newly appointed Level 1 employee receiving HRA, the normal in-hand amount will often fall roughly around ₹29,000 to ₹33,500 per month before allowing for employee-specific deductions or special allowances. Track Maintainers and employees doing eligible night duty can receive more.
Why Railway Group D Salary Changes by City
House Rent Allowance is one of the biggest reasons two employees at the same pay level can receive different salaries.
Under the current HRA structure, rates are 30% for X-class cities, 20% for Y-class cities and 10% for Z-class locations because DA has crossed the 50% threshold.

HRA is not simply an automatic cash addition in every situation. Railway accommodation and the employee’s actual entitlement can change what appears on the salary slip.
Railway Group D Transport Allowance
Transport Allowance is separate from HRA. Under the 7th CPC structure, employees in Pay Levels 1 and 2 have lower base TA rates than employees in higher pay levels.
The standard Level 1 and Level 2 rates are ₹1,350 per month in higher TPTA cities and ₹900 per month at other places, with Dearness Allowance also applying to the Transport Allowance.

Is ₹1,800 Grade Pay Added to Railway Group D Salary?
No. This is an important point because many salary pages still show a separate ₹1,800 grade pay line and then add it to ₹18,000 basic pay.
Under the 7th CPC pay structure, the old Pay Band plus Grade Pay system was replaced by the Pay Matrix. The old ₹1,800 grade pay is relevant for identifying the corresponding pre-revised category, but the current entry-level basic pay itself is ₹18,000 in Level 1.
You should therefore not calculate a new employee’s salary as ₹18,000 + ₹1,800 grade pay.
Correct 7th CPC starting point: Level 1 basic pay = ₹18,000. The old ₹1,800 grade pay is not an additional ₹1,800 payment to be added on top of that basic salary.

This does not mean every employee automatically reaches a particular cell on the same anniversary. Actual pay progression depends on the applicable increment date, promotion, MACP benefits, service events and Railway rules.
Railway Group D Salary After 5 Years
Pages that give one exact “salary after five years” number can be misleading because an employee may receive increments, promotion or MACP benefits at different points.
If an employee remains in Level 1 and receives normal annual progression, basic pay moves through the Level 1 matrix rather than increasing by an arbitrary percentage.
The correct way to estimate future salary is to identify the employee’s actual Pay Matrix cell at that time and then apply the DA, HRA and other allowances in force on that date.

Track Maintainer Grade IV Salary
Track Maintainer Grade IV is one of the best-known Level 1 Railway posts. It starts with the same ₹18,000 Level 1 basic pay, but eligible Track Maintainers receive a separate Risk and Hardship Allowance of ₹2,700 per month.
Railway Board instructions specifically identify Track Maintainers I, II, III and IV for this allowance. It should not be added to every Railway Group D salary calculation.
Do Railway Group D Employees Get Night Duty Allowance?
Eligible non-gazetted Railway employees can receive Night Duty Allowance when they perform qualifying night duty.
Railway Board instructions permit NDA for eligible non-gazetted employees up to Pay Level 7, including certain MACP cases. A basic-pay ceiling of ₹43,600 is used for working out the hourly NDA rate under the relevant instructions.
Night Duty Allowance is therefore not a fixed amount that should be included in every Group D salary estimate. It depends on the employee’s actual duty roster and eligible night-duty hours.
RRB Group D Posts Covered Under Level 1
The RRB Level 1 recruitment notification covers various posts across Indian Railways rather than one single job called “Group D”.
The official CEN 08/2024 recruitment notified 32,438 Level 1 vacancies with an initial pay of ₹18,000. The posts are distributed across different Railway units and departments.
Salary can vary slightly by post because duty-based allowances are not the same for every role. A Track Maintainer, for example, may receive an allowance that does not apply to another Level 1 employee.

NPS or UPS for New Railway Employees?
Pension deductions are another reason a current 2026 Railway salary guide should not simply copy an old payslip calculation.
The Unified Pension Scheme became available from 1 April 2025 as an option under NPS for eligible Central Government employees. New Central Government recruits joining on or after that date can choose UPS subject to the applicable rules and timelines.
Railways also circulated the UPS framework to employees. Therefore, a new recruit’s retirement-system treatment cannot always be described simply as “mandatory NPS” without qualification.

What About the 8th Pay Commission Railway Group D Salary?
This is where many 2026 salary articles go too far.
The 8th Central Pay Commission has been officially constituted. The Government notification establishing the Commission is dated 3 November 2025, and the Commission is active in 2026.
Its terms provide up to 18 months from constitution to make its recommendations. As of September 2026, the official Commission website shows that it is still holding consultations and visits.
No official 8th CPC fitment factor has yet been notified. Numbers such as 1.92, 2.08, 2.57 or 2.86 that appear on salary websites are projections or assumptions, not the final Government-approved Railway Group D fitment factor.
The Government said in its October 2025 announcement that, based on the normal ten-year cycle, the effect of 8th CPC recommendations would ordinarily be expected from 1 January 2026. That does not mean the revised Level 1 pay has already been fixed or implemented.
Until revised pay rules are formally accepted and notified, the reliable current starting basic-pay figure for RRB Level 1 remains ₹18,000 under the 7th CPC structure.
