CGPA Grading System in India: 10-Point Scale, Grades and Grade Points Explained
India does not have one identical grade table for every university. A 10-point grading system is common, and labels such as O, A+, A and B+ are widely used, but the marks range attached to each grade can differ by institution and regulation.
A 10-point scale usually caps the highest grade point at 10, but grade names, marks ranges, pass grade and fail treatment can vary by university.
How a 10-Point Grading System Works
A course starts with marks or another assessment result. The university maps that performance to a letter grade, the letter grade carries a numerical grade point, and course credits determine how much that grade contributes to SGPA or CGPA.
| Stage | Example |
|---|---|
| Assessment result | Course marks / performance |
| Letter grade | O, A+, A, B+, B, C, etc. |
| Grade point | 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, etc. in one common style |
| Credit weighting | Grade point × course credits |
| Semester result | SGPA / GPA |
| Cumulative result | CGPA |
Common Grade Labels
The table below is an illustrative grade-point pattern, not a national marks chart.
| Illustrative Grade | Illustrative Point | Description Often Used |
|---|---|---|
| O / S | 10 | Outstanding / Superior |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | Very Good |
| B+ | 7 | Good |
| B | 6 | Above average / Good |
| C | 5 | Average / Pass in some systems |
| D / P | 4 | Pass in some systems |
| F / U | 0 | Fail in many systems |
Do not use this table unless it matches your regulation. Grade mappings can change by university, programme and batch.
Absolute vs Relative Grading
In absolute grading, fixed marks ranges map to grades. In relative grading, boundaries can depend partly on the class performance distribution. The same raw mark can therefore lead to different grades under different designs.
How Credits Affect the Average
SGPA / CGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Σ(Credits)A 4-credit course with grade point 9 contributes 36 weighted points; a 2-credit course with the same grade contributes 18. See How to Calculate CGPA from SGPA.
Why O, A+, A and B+ Differ Across Universities
Universities can revise academic regulations between batches, and autonomous colleges can use their own rules. If you study under Anna University, use the regulation selector in the Anna University GPA Calculator rather than assuming one universal mapping.
What Is the Pass Grade?
There is no single national answer. Some systems use 4 grade points as a pass; others use 5; professional programmes may require separate minimum marks in practical, internal or end-semester components.
CGPA vs Percentage Scale
A 10-point scale is not simply “percentage divided by 10”. Grade bands can compress several raw marks into one grade point, and universities can prescribe different equivalence formulas. See CGPA to Percentage.
Common Student Mistakes
Typical errors are assuming O always means the same marks range, treating A+ as 9 everywhere, using a fixed national pass CGPA, converting everything with ×9.5 and ignoring the regulation year.
Bottom Line
The Indian CGPA system is best understood as a family of credit-based grading systems, not one identical national grade chart. Learn the structure, but use your own university’s grade table for actual calculations.
Absolute Grading Example
In an absolute grading system, the university may define fixed marks ranges for each grade. For example, a regulation could state that a particular range earns A and the next range earns B+. The advantage is predictability: students can estimate the grade needed from the published table. The disadvantage is that a very difficult examination can affect an entire class without changing those fixed boundaries.
Relative Grading Example
In relative grading, the grade boundary can depend on how the class performs. A mark of 75 might produce one grade in a difficult paper and another in an easier paper because the distribution is different. Relative grading is designed to interpret performance in context, but students may find the final grade harder to predict before results are released.
Why Grade Point and Marks Are Not the Same
A grade point is a coded academic value, not the raw mark itself. If all marks from 80 to 89 receive the same grade point, then 80 and 89 contribute equally to SGPA even though the raw marks differ by nine. This compression is one reason a CGPA-to-percentage conversion can only be an institutional equivalence rather than a perfect recovery of original marks.
What Happens to Non-Credit Courses?
Many programmes contain audit courses, mandatory activities, value-added courses or pass/fail requirements that appear on the transcript but do not contribute credits to CGPA. A student can therefore complete an important requirement without that course changing the cumulative numerical average. Always check whether the course carries credits that count toward CGPA.
How Failed Grades Are Usually Represented
Many 10-point systems assign zero grade points to an F or equivalent fail grade. What happens next varies. A reappearance may replace the failed grade for cumulative calculation, may be capped at a particular grade, or may follow another rule. The grade table alone is not enough; the repeat-course clause matters too.
Why Regulations Change Between Batches
Universities periodically revise curricula, credit totals, grade bands, assessment weights and degree-classification rules. A senior’s formula can therefore be wrong for a junior batch even in the same college. Use your admission year or regulation code whenever you search for grading rules.
How to Read a Grade Card Correctly
Look for course code, course title, credits, letter grade, grade point, result status, semester GPA and cumulative GPA. If the grade card shows only a letter grade and credits, use the official grade table to identify the corresponding point. Do not guess from marks ranges used in another regulation.
Can a 4-Point GPA Be Compared Directly With a 10-Point CGPA?
No simple multiplication gives a universally valid comparison. A 4-point system and a 10-point system can use different grade bands and institutional standards. For applications, report the original scale unless the receiving institution asks for an official conversion or uses its own credential-evaluation process.
What Students Should Save
Keep a PDF or copy of the academic regulation applicable to your batch along with transcripts. Years later, an employer or overseas university may ask how grades were awarded or converted. Having the original rule is more reliable than trying to reconstruct it from an unofficial chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 10-point CGPA grading system?
It is a system where course grades are represented by numerical grade points up to 10 and combined using the institution’s credit rules.
Is O always 10 points?
Often, but not universally. Some universities use S as the top grade or different mappings.
What is A+ in CGPA?
Many 10-point systems assign A+ a value such as 9, but your university’s regulation is the authority.
Is B+ a good grade?
It usually represents performance above the middle of the passing range in systems that use B+, but the actual band varies.
Do all Indian universities use 10-point CGPA?
No. Institutions and older regulations can use other grading scales.
