How to Use the Anna University GPA Calculator
Select the academic regulation shown on your grade sheet, then enter the courses from one semester. For each course, add the credit value and select the letter grade. The course name or code is optional, so you can leave it blank if you only want the calculation.
The calculator starts with six rows because many semesters contain several theory and laboratory courses. Add more rows when needed, or remove unused rows. Completely blank rows are ignored. A partially completed row is not ignored: if you enter credits but forget the grade, the calculator asks you to finish that row before calculating.
Use Load Example if you want to see a filled sample. The example adapts to the selected regulation, so it will not insert an R2025-only grade into R2021.
Anna University GPA Formula
Anna University calculates semester GPA using course credits and grade points. A higher-credit course contributes more to the semester GPA than a lower-credit course.
This is why a simple average of letter-grade points can be wrong. If one course carries four credits and another carries two, the four-credit course must have twice the weighting in the calculation.
The calculator keeps full numerical precision during the calculation and displays the final GPA to two decimal places.
R2025 Grade Points for Affiliated B.E./B.Tech.
Academic Regulations 2025 applies to the relevant B.E./B.Tech. programmes offered by Anna University affiliated non-autonomous institutions from the 2025–26 academic year. Two grade-point details are especially easy to get wrong: B is worth 6.5 points, and C+ is worth 6 points.

R2025 NPTEL / SWAYAM ranges
R2025 gives NPTEL/SWAYAM a different marks-to-grade range. The grade points remain S 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6.5, C+ 6 and C 5, but the lower marks boundaries differ.

AR2023-R1 Grade Points for University Departments
Academic Regulations 2023 Revision 1 applies to the relevant Anna University University Department programmes, including programmes in CEG, ACT and MIT. The grade-point scale used by this calculator is S = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6 and C = 5, with U carrying 0 points.

Do not automatically convert ordinary AR2023-R1 marks using a fixed 91–100, 81–90 table. The regulation describes customised grading for applicable ordinary courses. Fixed ranges apply to specified course categories, and NPTEL/SWAYAM has its own treatment. For an ordinary course, the most reliable input is the letter grade printed on the official result.
R2021 Grade Points and the U-Grade Rule
For affiliated B.E./B.Tech. students under R2021, this calculator uses the amended grade-point mapping O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6 and C = 5. R2021 needs special handling for a U grade: the regulation states that U grades are excluded when calculating GPA and CGPA.

Suppose one semester contains three applicable courses:

GPA vs CGPA at Anna University
GPA measures performance for a particular semester using the courses registered in that semester. CGPA is cumulative and represents the applicable courses across multiple semesters. The two should not be treated as interchangeable.

Does Anna University Convert Semester GPA to Percentage?
This calculator does not display an “official GPA percentage” because the explicit percentage-conversion provision in the regulations is tied to the CGPA shown on the consolidated grade sheet. Applying GPA × 10, GPA × 9.5 or (GPA − 0.5) × 10 to a semester GPA and calling it an official Anna University rule would be misleading.

What Happens If I Have a U Grade?
The handling is regulation-specific. Under R2021, the official regulation explicitly says U grades are excluded for GPA and CGPA, so this calculator excludes both the course’s grade points and its credits from the GPA denominator and marks that course as excluded in the calculation breakdown.
For R2025 and AR2023-R1, the regulations define U as a 0-point grade and describe GPA as a credit-weighted average of grades for registered courses. This calculator therefore includes the course credits with a zero-point contribution for those two regulation modes. The breakdown makes that treatment visible instead of hiding it.
Autonomous vs Non-Autonomous Colleges
Affiliation to Anna University does not automatically mean every institution follows the same grade table. An autonomous college may have its own academic regulations, grade letters, pass criteria and GPA rules. If your college is autonomous, use the regulation published by your institution rather than assuming the R2025 or R2021 affiliated non-autonomous table applies.
