How to Use the Anna University CGPA Calculator
First, select the academic regulation that applies to you. If you study in an Anna University affiliated non-autonomous B.E./B.Tech. institution and joined from the 2025–26 academic year, select R2025 – Affiliated. Students in Anna University University Departments such as CEG, ACT and MIT who are covered by Academic Regulations 2023 Revision 1 should select AR2023-R1. Students continuing under the affiliated institution Regulations 2021 can select R2021 – Affiliated.
For a quick cumulative calculation, choose Semester-wise CGPA and enter the GPA and applicable credit total for every completed semester. If you have subject grades and credits, use Course-wise CGPA. Course-wise calculation is closer to the University’s underlying method because it works directly from credits and grade points rather than from already-rounded semester GPA figures.
How Anna University Calculates CGPA
Anna University uses a credit-weighted calculation. Each course contributes in proportion to its credit value. The general calculation is:
The official regulations also describe GPA as a weighted average. This means a four-credit course has more influence on GPA or CGPA than a one-credit course. For the same reason, a semester carrying 24 applicable credits should not automatically have the same influence as a semester carrying 18 credits.
Anna University R2025 Grading System
Academic Regulations 2025 (Affiliated), referred to as AR2025-UG(Affl.), applies to B.E./B.Tech. students admitted from 2025–26 in affiliated non-autonomous institutions. R2025 changed an important part of the grade-point structure: the B grade is worth 6.5 points and a separate C+ grade worth 6 points is present.

Anna University AR2023-R1 Grading System
Academic Regulations 2023 Revision 1 (2024) applies to the relevant B.E./B.Tech. programmes in Anna University University Departments, including CEG, ACT and MIT. Its grade-point table is not the same as R2025: S = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6 and C = 5. There is no C+ grade in this table.

Anna University R2021 CGPA Calculation
R2021 remains relevant to students who were admitted under that regulation. The official amendments changed the grading terminology from earlier versions, so the calculator uses the amended affiliated B.E./B.Tech. mapping: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6 and C = 5. The official R2021 material also states that U grades are excluded from GPA and CGPA calculation and that CGPA is converted to percentage using CGPA × 10.
Because regulation amendments matter, use the grade printed on your actual grade sheet as the input rather than trying to infer a grade from marks using an unrelated table.

How to Calculate Anna University CGPA Manually
Assume your first three completed semesters have different applicable credit totals:

CGPA = 547.05 ÷ 66 = 8.29 after rounding to two decimal places. A simple average of 8.20, 8.55 and 8.10 would not reproduce the same weighted calculation when credit totals differ.
Can I Simply Average My Semester GPAs?
Not necessarily. A simple arithmetic mean gives every semester equal weight. Anna University’s academic regulations calculate GPA/CGPA using course credits. The semester-wise mode on this page therefore weights each entered semester GPA by the applicable semester credits. Course-wise mode is preferable when you want the closest possible reconstruction of the official result.

Anna University First Class and Distinction
CGPA alone is not enough to conclusively award a degree classification. For example, R2025 uses a numerical CGPA threshold of at least 8.50 for First Class with Distinction, but the regulation also includes conditions relating to first appearance, prescribed duration and prevention from examinations. R2025 First Class uses a CGPA threshold of at least 6.50 together with its other regulatory conditions.
The calculator therefore shows only a CGPA-based indication for R2025. It does not tell you that you have officially earned First Class or First Class with Distinction. Final classification is determined under the applicable Anna University academic regulation.
How Arrears Affect CGPA and Degree Classification
Do not treat four separate concepts as if they were the same: an uncleared course, a course later cleared on reappearance, CGPA computation, and degree classification. R2021 explicitly states that U grades are excluded from GPA and CGPA. Current regulations also contain separate first-appearance and programme-completion conditions for classification. For this reason, the course-wise calculator accepts successfully completed grades only and does not try to model every failed, withdrawn or attendance-related status.
Autonomous vs Non-Autonomous Anna University Colleges
An institution can be affiliated with Anna University and still be autonomous. Autonomous colleges may prescribe their own academic regulation, grading table, pass rules and conversion method. The R2025 affiliated option on this page specifically refers to Anna University’s affiliated non-autonomous B.E./B.Tech. regulations.
